Insulators and Conductors Bell Ringer-What is a conductor and insulator?

Standards SPI 0607.12.2 Identify materials that can conduct electricity.  I Can:  0607.12.3 Compare and contrast the characteristics of objects and materials that conduct electricity with those that are electrical insulators.

Conductors and Insulators OBJECTIVES By the end of this lesson you should know: That Heat Energy flows from high to low temperatures. A Conductor is a material that allows heat energy to flow through it quickly. Some materials are better conductors than others. Insulators are materials that are poor conductors of heat energy. That conduction in solids, liquids and gases can be explained with the Particle model.

What is Heat Energy Transfer? Turn and talk with your partner. Explain to each other what you think heat energy is.

Heat Energy Transfer is... Heat energy is the concept that heat travels from warm objects to cold objects. EXAMPLE- Think about a bowl of soup you have warmed up in the microwave. When you pick the bowl up, does the bowl become the temperature of your hands, or do your hands heat up to the warm temperature of the bowl? Use your hand and the desk or table infront of you.  Let's discuss your result.

Draw this in your comp. book Draw a t-chart in your comp. book like the one below.  We will be adding to this during the lesson. Conductors                                Insulators

What are Conductors? Conductors are materials that allow heat to move easily through them.

Examples of Conductors Metal Glass Copper Aluminum

What are Insulators? Insulators are materials that do not allow heat to move easily through them.

Examples of Insulators Paper Snow Wool Cork Plastic Air

Have you ever thought about how electrical wires work?

Explanation The electricity circulating through wires connected to your lights, TVs, microwaves, etc are extremely dangerous. That is why you are told from the time you are a baby that you should NEVER touch exposed wires or electrical outlets with your bare hands or other conductors.  Wires are protected by insulators (rubber) which allows us to touch them without getting severely hurt.

Quick Activity Divide up into groups of 2 We are going to play Rally-Robin. Listen up for the instructions.

Summarizer Complete the hand out. Take out a red pen when you are finished. You will trade papers with a partner when I tell you to so that we can grade these.
