Chapter 4 Socialization

What is Human Nature? How many of our characteristics come from “nature” (heredity) and how many from “nurture” (the social environment)? Humans have no natural language. The ability to develop intelligence and relations with others depends on early interaction. Society makes us human. It is through human contact that we learn to be members of the human community. YouTube - dog girl

Cooley’s Looking Glass Self How do we develop a self? Charles Horton Cooley stated we develop a self by interacting with others. The looking Glass Self - the process by which a self develops. Social Interaction (1) we imagine how we appear to others. (2) we interpret others reactions. (3) we develop a self-concept A favorable reaction in the “social mirror” leads to a positive self-concept, while a negative reflection leads to a negative concept.

Mead’s Role Taking George Herbert Mead added that play is critical to the development of the self. Children learn to take the role of the other. They put themselves in someone else’s shoes. At first, they take on the role of only significant others. As they develop, they take on the expectations of others - the generalized other. The human mind is a product of one’s social setting.

Piaget’s Development Stages Jean Piaget wondered how we develop reason? Children go through four stages. (1) The sensorimotor stage. (2) The preoporational stage. (3) The concrete operational stage. (4) The formal operational stage.

Socialization Socialization is essential for our development. Our behavior is shaped according to cultural standards. Socialization is intended to turn us into conforming members of society. Socialization=the society within you.

Agents of Socialization Agents of socialization - people and groups that influence our self-concept, emotions, attitudes, and behavior. (1) the family (2) neighborhoods (3) religion (4) School/day care (5) peer groups - individuals of roughly the same age who are linked by common interests (6) sports (7) the workplace (8) Media

Socialization into Gender Gender socialization - the ways in which society sets children onto different courses in life because they are male or female. We receive gender messages from: (1) our family (2) mass media - forms of communication directed to large audiences. YouTube - Sherri Shepherd: Clearly defined gender roles or else YouTube - why study home economics YouTube - Women In the Workplace

Resocialization Resocialization - learning new norms, values, attitudes, and behaviors that match a new situation in life. It occurs each time we learn something contrary to our previous experiences. Total institutions - places where people are cut off from the rest of society and where they come under total control of the officials who run the place.

Socialization through the Life Course The life course - the stages from birth to death. As you pass through each stage, it affects your behavior. Your life course differs by social location. The stages: Childhood Adolescence Young and Middle Adulthood The Older Years

Are We Prisoners of Socialization? Sociologists do not think of people as robots. Socialization is powerful, but the self is dynamic. Each of us is actively involved in the social construction of the self.
