Wind Picture of wind farm in Judith Gap, Montana (Wickimedia).

How is wind measured? - An anemometer measures wind speed and the wind vane provides direction.

Sun’s role in wind. - Sun heats the land and water. Uneven heating occurs. Area of low pressure develops. Convection begins by warm air rising. Air moves from area of higher pressure to lower pressure.

What would wind look like without a spinning Earth?

Global winds are caused by Earth’s rotation.

Coriolis Effect on global winds Coriolis Effect on global winds? -Which direction are high pressures going in the Northern Hemisphere? -Southern Hemisphere?

Hurricane “The Eye of the Storm” Southern Hemisphere Northern Hemisphere

Wind is affected by land and water. Land Breeze Sea Breeze Anybody want to be a weatherman in San Diego?

Wind is affected by topography.

Rocky Mountain Front 9,000 foot peaks and low valleys make for a windy paradise.

Summer Monsoons in India Summer vs. Winter Indian Ocean is cooler than the land causing much rain
