PRESENTED BY THE OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR EXAM INFORMATION

PREPARING YOUR FINAL EXAM A new examination with new questions be prepared for each examination period, and that old questions not be reused. Likewise, questions should not be used from examinations given by other professors or found in published study aids. Through painful experience we have learned that, however unlikely, there are no sources which will elude discovery by some member of the class. Once you have made any final announcements regarding your examination, it is important that you not make any changes. Students will have begun preparing for your specific type of exam already and any alterations may render the students work obsolete.

B EFORE YOU DRAFT YOUR EXAM Your instructions and limitations, and allowable laptop usage for in-class exams, should be noted on the cover of the exam. Is it possible for our proctors to enforce your restrictions on materials used during exams? If you have some unusual restrictions, please call us in advance so we may determine if they are enforceable in an exam setting.

B EFORE YOU DRAFT YOUR EXAM Please feel free to use specific requirements (word or page limitations or character counts). Please note, one single-spaced handwritten exam book page equals 300 typed words. Please proofread your examination with great care. Once the exam has been copied, any changes will need to done with an Exam Errata distributed with your exam.

LAPTOP USAGE DURING IN-CLASS EXAMS. Faculty members may allow students the use of their hard drives or to search the Internet if (a) the professor is offering an open book exam, (b) the professor affirmatively directs the Registrars Office to permit this access, and (c) the professor informs students that this access will be allowed. Access to computer materials and the Internet does not mean that students may consult one another or any other person during the exam by computer or other electronic device. This option is not permitted for limited materials examinations.

S UGGESTED G UIDELINES FOR P ROFESSORS W HILE THE E XAM IS B EING G IVEN The Office of the Registrar no longer fields student questions about the substance of the exam. The students are directed to state their assumptions and to keep working regardless of whether or not there is a typo or error on the exam itself. It has proven too difficult and too inconsistent to attempt to reach professors with a question during the administration of their exams. Furthermore, it disadvantages students who do their questions out of order or who finish early.

D ELIVERY AND P ICK -U P OF C OMPLETED E XAMS You can expect completed essay exams to be delivered within one working day of the exam date. All Saturday exams will be delivered on the following Monday, unless you contact us to arrange for an earlier delivery. We will make every attempt to accommodate your requests. The Office of the Registrar does not have resources during the exam period to make copies of exams. You will receive the original exams only. If you need additional copies you will need to make those arrangements.

D EFERRED E XAMS Please refer all student requests for exam deferrals to the Office of the Registrar. Student requests to professors for an exam deferral compromises the students anonymity. The Office of the Registrar has a responsive and well- publicized exam deferral policy which allows us to assist students who have supervening circumstances such as illness or serious personal problems during exams. Wrapped with your exams will be a notice advising you whether any deferred exams have been approved for your course as of the date of your exam.

E XAM F EEDBACK AND R ETURN Faculty members are asked to submit all scored exams and graded papers to the Office of the Registrar. Under the rules of our accrediting associations, all papers and exams must be kept on file at the Law Center for one year. When you submit your grades please bring us your scored exams so that we may make them available to students who wish to review them. We hold an Exam Review each semester.

E XAM F EEDBACK AND R ETURN For each exam given over the course of a semester, faculty members are encouraged to provide either (a) a detailed feedback memorandum or (b) a best exam, or a combination of best answers from a number of exams. Please notify us if you DO NOT want this information posted to the Library. Faculty members who choose the best exam option are free to submit more than one best exam to the Office of the Registrar.

QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS? Please contact Dan Matthews, the Manager of Exam Administration, at (202) or We will gladly cooperate in making special arrangements to accommodate you and our students. Thank you for your assistance.
