French and Indian War 8-2.1

I. Causes of the French and Indian War There was an economic rivalry between France and England. Both practiced mercantilism to make lots of $$$. England used salutary neglect with its colonies. Looking the other way when colonies broke the rules. This rivalry led to wars

I. Causes of the French and Indian War The French moved into the Ohio River Valley. Named because Great Britain was fighting against the French and their Indian allies.

II. Cherokee War French and Indian War led to the Cherokee War in SC. Conditions for war start when English settlers move into backcountry. French traders move into area and English settlers want a treaty w/Cherokee.

II. Cherokee War Cherokee think treaty means they are equal to the British. British think the Cherokee understand the British are in charge. Treaty creates 30 years of peace.

II. Cherokee War French attack the Cherokee and the British don’t protect the Cherokee. Feeling cheated, Cherokees take horses Whites attack. Cherokees retaliate. Governor tries to stop it by stopping trade w/Cherokee and taking hostages

II. Cherokee War Fighting lasted about two years with many Cherokee deaths. Treaty ending the war created a boundary between the colony and the Cherokee.

III. Aftermath Britain won the French and Indian War. Good for SC b/c: France lost all her land in North America to England. Spain lost control of Florida to England Good for SC b/c: The Spanish are out of Florida which means less attacks. Indigo trade expands.

III. Aftermath Britain stopped using salutary neglect b/c they needed money to pay for the war. The Sugar Act was used to: Stop smuggling with France. Used courts w/o juries Raise money. Colonists said, “Parliament can control trade, but these courts violate our rights.”

III. Aftermath England now had huge debts b/c of the war. They imposed taxes on the colonists to pay the debts.
