Lesson 1-5 Solving Equations with Rational Numbers Obj: The student will be able to solve equations with rational numbers. HWK COS: 8-EE7, 8-EE7b

Properties of Equality 1) Addition Property of Equality – You can add the same number to both sides of an equation and the sides remain equal Arithmetic Algebra 3 = 3 if a = b 3 + 2 = 3 + 2 then a + c = b + c 2) Subtraction Property of Equality – You can subtract the same number from each side of an equation and the sides remain equal Arithmetic Algebra 7 = 7 if a = b 7 – 3 = 7 – 3 then a – c = b – c

3) Multiplication Property of Equality – You can multiply each side of an equation by the same nonzero number and the sides remain equal Arithmetic Algebra 5 = 5 if a = b and c ≠ 0 5 • 3 = 5 • 3 then ac = bc 4) Division Property of Equality – You can divide each side of an equation by the same nonzero number and the sides remain equal Arithmetic Algebra 12 = 12 if a = b and c ≠ 0 12 4 = 12 4 then 𝑎 𝑐 = 𝑏 𝑐

Solve each equation. SHOW YOUR WORK. Ex 1) y – 17.5 = 11 Ex 2) -4.2p = 12.6 Ex 3) x + 1 9 = - 4 9 Ex 4) 𝑡 7.5 = 4

Ex 5) x - 1 8 = 9 16 Ex 6) 3 5 w = 3 16

Ex 7) Sully has agreed to paint 3 houses Ex 7) Sully has agreed to paint 3 houses. If he knows that he can paint 2 5 of a house in one day, how many days will it take him to paint all 3 houses?

Journal Entry (put date on paper) Ex 8) Explain the process in solving an addition equation with fractions having like denominators. Ex 9) Explain the process in solving an addition equation with fractions having unlike denominators.
