Presentation transcript:

Careers within universities UCL, Bloomsbury and East London Doctoral Training Partnership Careers within universities Professor Andy Tolmie UBEL DTP Director

Do you want to do it? Responsibilities/expectations within academic careers Research - publications at REF 3*/4*: internationally leading/ outstanding in originality, significance, rigour - grant income: at 80% fEC if possible; only 20% time allowance without this - knowledge exchange/impact

Do you want to do it? Teaching - lectures etc that are research-led - developing innovative modules/programmes (leadership here) - dissertation/doctoral supervision – capacity-building and feed into research Service - internal roles/committees etc - journals, funding body work NB not expected to start by hitting all this, but need to work towards it to progress

Routes Lectureships: may not be first step, though NB parental leave cover etc – but think carefully about teaching-only positions Postdoctoral fellowships: Research Council format; ECR awards; project-linked positions Importance of research track record (commensurate with career point), teaching experience NB external openings, especially with links to industry and other collaborators; academic careers as follow on

Responding to ads Need to actively seek/watch out for opportunities (always), with support where possible Read job descriptions carefully for essential and desirable criteria Think about fit: scoring system for shortlisting means you need to hit ‘meets criterion’ for as many as possible, ‘exceeds’ where possible Interviews: be ready to talk to these points – but also think about other questions that might be asked, including by you

Questions?
