Sexual & Asexual reproduction Lesson 3
Lesson 3 Pollination and fertilisation (in plants)
Plant reproduction: copy There are two stages of plant reproduction: Pollination and Fertilisation
Plant reproduction The pollen grains (MALE SEX CELL) need to move from the anther (MALE) to the stigma (FEMALE) Pollen transferred to female reproductive organ (stigma)
Pollination SELF-POLLINATION- the transfer of pollen from anther to stigma on the SAME plant CROSS-POLLINATION- the transfer of pollen from anther to stigma on DIFFERENT plant
Pollination- copy Pollination is when the pollen is transferred from the anther to the female reproductive organ- the stigma There are two types- self pollination (transfers to the same plant) and cross-pollination (transfer from different plants)
Copy Pollination can be carried by either THE WIND or by INSECTS. Insect and wind pollinated plants look and smell very different
Fertilisation Fertilisation occurs after the pollen grain lands on the stigma The pollen grain grows a tube which reaches the ovule- the pollen then travels down the tube and FUSES with the ovule to form a zygote
Fertilisation The OVARY becomes the FRUIT and OVULES become the SEEDS PETALS then die and drop off
Fertilisation: copy After landing on the stigma- the pollen grows a pollen tube The pollen travels down the tube to the ovule- both nuclei fuse and form a zygote which later becomes the seed
