Opening assignment – page 46 1. Write down the definition of volume in notes. 2. What are the common units of volume? (There are three!) 3. How many milliliters are there in a teaspoon? 4. What is the volume of the brick? How was the volume calculated?

Volume

Volume lab What is volume? Matter has MASS and takes up space The amount of space that an object takes up is called volume.

Three ways to find the volume of an object Solid objects like a Rectangular prism Liquid volume Irregular shaped object

Regularly solid objects We can find the volume of a rectangular object by multiplying the length, width and height. 10 cm 9 cm 8 cm

How do we measure liquid volumes We will be using graduated cylinders to find the volume of liquids and other objects. Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. When using a real cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water. What is the volume of water in the cylinder? _____mL

What does the prefix milli mean? 1 Milliliter = 1/1000th of a liter. So milli means 1/1000th

How do you find the volume an irregular shaped object? Amount of H2O with object = ______ About of H2O without object = ______ Difference = Volume = ______
