Report from JAXA 17th GSICS Executive Panel, Biot, 2-3 June 2016 Misako Kachi (Earth Observation Research Center, JAXA) GSICS-EP-17, Biot, 2-3 June 2016

Overall agency update Overall satellite planning GPM (JAXA-NASA joint): Operational. DPR & GMI products were updated to V04 in Mar. 2016. ALOS-2: Operational. GCOM-W: Operational. GOSAT: Operational. TRMM (JAXA-NASA joint): Ended operation in Apr. 2015. AMSR-E (on NASA Aqua): Ended operation in Dec. 2015. Plan to produce AMSR-E/AMSR2 consistent products GCOM-C: To be launched in JFY2016 GOSAT-2: To be launched in early 2018 Other major events affecting the agency or its participation in GSICS Discussion of GCOM-W follow-on is ongoing. A sentence was newly added to the Japanese Basic Plan on Space Policy revised edition (Dec. 2015) – “Accelerate a study on how future GCOM-W mission should be, including follow-on mission, from JFY2016.” JAXA exchanged agreement with JMA to produce & distribute Himawari-8 products to share synergy between Himawari-8 & JAXA EO satellites. Participation in EP, GDWG, GRWG Points of contacts/meeting participants: EP: Misako Kachi (new) GDWG: None GRWG: Hiroshi Murakami, Misako Kachi, Takashi Maeda (new) Main contribution to GDWG actions None Main contribution to GRWG actions Presentation of calibration activities in JAXA EO missions at the GSICS Mini Conference on Feb. 29, 2016 in Tsukuba, Japan. Evaluation of Impacts of GSICS inter-calibration on JAXA Himawari-8 SST Provide GOSAT TANSO-FTS ILS information through the web for hyperspectral IR satellite comparison, in response to A/I at the GSICS meeting in Mar. 2016. Preparation of GCOM-C/SGLI lunar calibration using GIRO Preparation of GOSAT-2/CAI-2 lunar calibration using GIRO (ongoing) GSICS-EP-17, Biot, 2-3 June 2016

Preparation of SGLI Lunar-Cal by GIRO GIRO: GSICS Implementation of the ROLO model SGLI lunar observation images (Monthly maneuver) GLI lunar observation through deep space window Formatting for GIRO input (NetCDF4) Colors shows GLI bands GIRO simulation SGLI response function GIRO program provided by GIRO team Aug. 2013 Oct. 2013 GIRO outputs (NetCDF4) 40.4deg 45.3deg I/O data will be shared within the GSICS lunar-cal community Consistent results for images in Aug and Oct 2013 Temporal change analysis Comparison with other sensors Lunar-cal exercise by using ADEOS-2 GLI lunar observations through deep-space window (supported by JMA/MSC) JAXA’s work

GSICS works of GOSAT 1. For hyperspectral IR satellite comparison, GOSAT TANSO-FTS ILS information is available from the GOSAT user web site: http://data.gosat.nies.go.jp/GosatUserInterfaceGateway/guig/techInfo/TFTSILFS.html cm-1 2. GOSAT lunar calibration data will be processed by GILO for preparation of GOSAT-2 in this year.

Highlights of other JAXA’s calibration activities of interest to the EP GOSAT-2 GOSAT-2 calibration plan is under preparation based on that of GOSAT. TRMM/PR & GPM-Core/DPR intercalibration PR and DPR calibration methods are almost same using Active Radar Calibrator. JAXA is currently working on conducting absolute calibration for PR/DPR while maintaining the continuity of σ0 of both. A slight offset bias seemed to exsit in the results of DPR external calibration. New DPR V04 relased in Mar. 2016 satisfied the continuity of σ0, but bias correction was not applied.
