Presentation transcript:

The common inspection framework How the new framework is working in practice Gill Jones HMI Deputy Director, Early Education

Principles of inspection reform Inspect the right things in the right way through a standardised inspection framework Provide comparable and accurate information for parents, carers, learners and employers to inform their choices Deliver timely inspections where there are signs of decline or improvement Have a proportionate approach to inspections Ensure rigorous quality of all inspections. 2/10

Understanding the changes 3/10

Common Inspection Framework (CIF) Inspectors make graded judgements, using the four-point scale, on the following areas: Effectiveness of leadership and management Quality of teaching, learning and assessment Personal development, behaviour and welfare Outcomes for children and learners. They also make a written judgement about the effectiveness of safeguarding in the provision.

Main changes for early years Pre-schools and nurseries now have half a day’s notice of a routine cycle inspection Specific judgement on teaching, learning and assessment Separate judgement on outcomes

Grade profile for the autumn term Inspections carried out by 31 December 2015 and published as at 31 January 2016.

CIF judgements Inspections carried out by 31 December 2015 and published as at 31 January 2016.

Vision for future of early years

What will the future look like? From April 2017, all early years inspections will be managed directly by Ofsted This brings early years into line with all other education remits Increased flexibility and improved quality Common inspection framework still in place - providers should notice little change from now 9/10
