Universiade By Pureum Jeon

Introduction Did you know that Universiade took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan? Universiade is very similar to Olympics. When Universiade starts, many young people from various visit the countries. Then, they compete in many events. Similar to the real Olympics, we can held Universiade weather summer or in winter. There is a company ‘FISU’, which holds the Universiade. Now, the president of FISU is Oleg Matytsin. So it means he is in charge of the Universiade.

FISU As mentioned above, FISU holds the Universiade. The word FISU stands for ‘International University Sports Federation’. The first president of it was, Paul Schleimer. He was a mathematician and also a physicist. The first Summer Universiade game was held in Tornio, Italy. It was on 1959. The first Winter Universiade game was in 1960, in Chamonix, France.

Reason In the beginning of 19th century, a Frenchman, Barron Pierre de Coubertin, suggested to create games for University students. So government talked about this and they came up with making Universiade, which is a compound word of University and Olympiade.

Events In Universiade, there are also many events similar to the real Olympic. As you can see, we can divide events to Summer and Winter events. For examples, in Winter events, there are short track speed skating, ice hockey, figure skating, and so on. In Summer events, there are Swimming, Football, Judo, and there are many other things.

Conclusion Since past, many athletes from many countries have been participating in Universiade game. As I have mentioned, the first games were held in Tornio, Italy in 1959. Now, we are doing it in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Similar to Olympics, athletes who win in the Universiade get medals. However, the best thing in the Universiade is having a new experience and having fun.
