Eridanus’ water nymphs By: josh Edwards

Background Eridanus is a river in northern part Italy, now known as the Po River Eridanus was made well known having been linked to the death of Phaethon The name Eridanus means “Early Burnt”, deriving from the Greek words eri and danos. He is named this because he was struck by the chariot of the flaming body of Phaethon. Eridanos is the son of Oceanus and Tethys as well.

Phaethon was the son of Apollo and the nymph Clymene For his birthday one year, Phaethon asked his father for proof that he was indeed the sun-god

When Apollo said he could have whatever he desired Having heard this, Phaethon wished for a chariot and Apollo granted him one So Phaethon, wanting to demonstrate his relationship with the sun….

So Phaethon headed towards the sun at once Phaethon drove off on the route of the sun, but sure enough, he could not control the powerful horses. He drove too close to the heavens in which Zeus was forced to strike down the chariot with a thunderbolt, killing Phaethon in the process

Phaeton died and fell from the sky, struck by Zeus' thunderbolt, and tumbled into the Eridanus Along the green banks of the river Eridanus, Cygnus mourned him and was transformed into a swan.
