Bell Ringer What is figurative language? List any figurative language you know. Why do you think authors use figurative language in their writing?

“Once Upon a Time” by Nadine Gordimer

Theme Theme is the main idea or the moral of a story. The idea is repeated throughout the whole story or novel, even if it is not directly stated. Examples of theme could be family, love, friendship, and fear.

Nadine Gordimer Born in South Africa in 1923. A lot of her writing is focused on the effects of apartheid on the lives of South Africans. Apartheid: “a policy of segregation or discrimination of race.” We will be focusing on her story “Once Upon a Time” in this class.
