MITOSIS
Cell Division All cells come from pre-existing cells through cell division This is how life is continued Two major phases; interphase and cell division
Cell Cycle Cells alternate btwn stages of dividing & not dividing Cell division = small part of the cell cycle
MITOSIS The process of cell division that R-> in growth and/or cell replacement
Cell division = dividing of nuclear materials and the sharing of cytoplasm, including the organelles.
Mitosis Animation
Mitosis Phases
Mitosis Phases Duplicated chromosomes divide and move to opposite ends of the cell Cell division continues with the separation of the cytoplasm into equal parts, creating two new cells The final step is the separation of the two cells - in animal cells, the cell membrane pinches together in the middle separating the cells
Class Work From what we know about mitosis, answer the following questions. 1) Describe what happens during interphase. 2)Why does your DNA duplicate before it divides. 3) List and describe four phases of mitosis. 4) A normal cell has 46 chromosomes. After the cell has undergone mitosis , how many chromosomes would you expect to find in each cell? Why ?
