AUTUMN 1 GEOGRAPHY : FANTASTIC PLACES To calculate the mean: Add up all the numbers, then divide by how many numbers there are. For example: 6,7,11 Add up the numbers: 6+11+7 = 24 Divide by how many numbers (3) 24/3 = 8 The mean is 8. Definition: GNI Gross National Income per person. The value of a country's income divided by the number of people in that country. Advantages of tourism in Kenya. Tourism encourages the building of main roads and communications. Jobs in tourism have helped develop peoples business skills. Tourism has led to a growth in tourism creating demand for food from local farmers. National parks have been created- encouraging people to protect the environment. Intermediate or appropriate technology is a middle way between high tech and low tech farming methods. They: Create employment for local people. Use sustainable technology and tools/knowledge of local people. Use newly developed technology that is low cost and local. This means local people can manage and control it themselves. In harmony with the local environment.

Emergency or short term aid needed after sudden disasters such as a flood or Tsunami Conditional or tied aid when one country donates money or resources to another, but with conditions attached. Charitable aid funded by donations from the public through organisations such as OXFAM. Long term or development aid involves providing local communities with education and skills for sustainable development. Multilateral aid given through international organisations such as the World Bank rather than by one specific country. Nigeria and Trans National Corporations (TNC’s) A TNC is a company that operates in more than one country. Shell (a TNC) in Nigeria. Shell is a TNC that operates in many countries around the world. Shells work in Nigeria produces more than 21%of the countries petroleum. Advantages of TNC’s to the host country. Shell provides jobs in factories. Shell has a charity (the Shell foundation) to help local communities and local wildlife. TNC’s can help countries develop by investing money, encouraging development. TNC’s pay tax. This is used by the government to help people. Shell uses lots of other local companies to help them run. This creates the multiplier effect.
