4 What is Asset Management and What It Is Not

5 IT Configuration Management: all configuration items used in the provision of live, operational services Configuration Management goes beyond the recording of computer hardware and/or software for the purpose of asset management, although it can be used to maintain asset information. The extra value provided is the rich source of support information that it provides to all interested parties. This information is typically stored together in a configuration management database (CMDB).CMDB Goals of Configuration Management: Identify and minimize the impact of changes Provide accurate information on CIs Improve security by controlling the versions of CIs in use Facilitate adherence to legal obligations Assist financial and expenditure planning

6 What is Asset Management and What It Is Not ITAM affects the entire cycle whereas Configuration management is concerned with operational details Request Receive Procure Deploy Dispose Stock Monitor MAC Support Financial Mgmt

Scope of Asset Management Current Scope Desktops, laptops and most recently displays Servers: physical and virtual (at data centers and remote locations) Network Devices Software Contracts related to the above asset types Future Scope Mainframe EIPT/Voice Security Certificates ITSM/ITAM (Remedy) team Implementation, support and operations of the BMC product suite Subject matter experts on the BMC product suite 7
