The Story of an Hour Exposition – Mrs. Mallard is sickly and suffers from a weak heart. Her sister comforts her after she receives news about her husbands death. Rising Action – Mr. Mallard has been killed in an accident. Mrs. Mallard goes into her room and begins to think about her new life free of her husband.

The Story of an Hour Climax – Mrs. Mallord realizes that she is now free from her marriage in which she wasn’t happy. She walks down the stairs a “goddess of victory” Falling Action – As she’s walking down, Mr. Mallard comes through the door unharmed. Resolution – Mrs. Mallard collapses from shock. The doctor says she died of “joy that kills,” though the reader knows she dies of disappointment and despair.

What is Tone? Tone: The writer’s attitude towards the subject of the piece, the audience, and self. Also known as, the way feelings are expressed. Conveyed through the use of: Diction (the words that the author uses in his/her writing) Point of View (the author’s view and how it affects his/her writing) Syntax (the arrangement of words to create sentences) And, the author’s level of formality (how formal or informal is the piece?)
