The American Alligator By: Marcus

Physical Characteristics The Alligator is 18 ft. long. Females are smaller. It can also weigh 450- 600 lbs. The color of it can be black, dark green, and brown.

Lifespan Alligators can live 60-80 years captive and 35-50 years in the wild.

EATING HABITS Alligators are carnivores. They eat fish, turtles, various mammals, birds, and other reptiles.

Population The population of the alligator is up to 25 million. They live in Florida.

Range/Habitat The Alligator’s range and habitat is in Florida, Southern Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, and Alabama. They live in ponds, marshes, wetlands, and rivers.

Adaptations Claws help it rip and tear its prey. Teeth help it eat its prey. The tail helps it to balance and swim.

Fun Fact The American Alligator goes faster in water than on land.

Endangered because… The American Alligator is endangered because of habitat loss and encounters with people.
