Atoms Vocab
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space Example:
Physical Properties Characteristic of a material that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the material Example: color, shape, mass, density, volume
Chemical Properties The types of chemical changes a substance is able to experience Examples: flammability, rusting
Atom The tiny particles that make up the 3 states of matter They are the SMALLEST unit of matter
Nucleus The center of the atom Contains the protons and neutrons Most of the atoms mass is located in the nucleus
Proton Have a positive (+) charge and are located inside the nucleus
Neutron Have NO charge and are located inside the nucleus NEUTRON
Electron Have a negative (-) charge and are located outside of the nucleus Electron
Electrical Charge Atoms can be either positive, negative or neutral + -
Atom with a neutral charge Atoms have no overall electrical charge They are said to be neutral The positive charges of the protons balance out the negative charges of the electrons
Atom with a Positive Charge - An atom with a positive charge will have more protons than electrons 7 + 7N - - - - - This atom has 7 protons, 7 neutrons and 6 electrons
Atom with a Negative Charge - An atom with a negative charge will have more electrons than protons 5 + 5N - - - - - This atom has 5 protons, 5 neutrons and 6 electrons
