Chemistry: Matter

Science: Lesson 1 What are Properties of Matter? What is matter? What are some examples of matter?

Elements Elements are building blocks of matter Can’t be broken down into smaller pieces Only a few combine to make up all kinds of matter

More About Elements Only a few elements exist in nature in pure form. Which precious metal is pure? What is your body mostly made of? Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen make up 96% of you!

Physical Properties of Matter What are physical properties? How we describe it just from our observations We can describe something’s: Color Hardness State of matter Magnetism Dissolves in other substances Temperature at boiling point Temperature it freezes Conducts electricity Mass Weight

Mass vs. Weight Mass = how much matter makes up an object Weight = how much gravity pulls an object Imagine you go to the moon. Which changes… your mass or your weight? You weigh six times more on the Earth!

Chemical Properties of Matter Tells how the substance may form a new substance when mixed with something else Examples: Wood is flammable – ash and gases Water is not flammable Iron can rust– combines with oxygen Gold does not rust
