ARCHIMEDES By Brittany Prytulka

Who was Archimedes Archimedes is a mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and an astronomer that was born in Syracuse, Sicily in Greece in 287 BC. Not much is known about Archimedes such as who he is related to or if he married and had a family. In his teens, Archimedes was sent to Alexandria, Egypt by his father to learn from teachers who had been taught by Euclid himself. He wasn’t only sent for his education, but there was much turmoil in the area and Archimedes’ father thought his son would be more safe in Alexandria.

Discoveries, Inventions & Mathematics The Archimedes Principal The use of the equation: 𝑚𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑣𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 =𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 to find the density of an object. Ҩ The Archimedes Screw This invention was originally created by Archimedes to move water for the large sized boat Syricusia in case of leaks or floods. Ҩ The Claw of Archimedes The Claw was a crane like machine that was created to protect Syracuse from enemy ships. Archimedes used The Claw to swing down and lift the boat’s nose out of water and possibly sink it. Ҩ The Heat Ray The Heat Ray was a device used to burn down enemy ships by using a collection of copper or bronze shields acting as mirrors and the sun. Click the green Ҩ for a link to a video or GIF

Discoveries, Inventions & Mathematics Continued… Pi Before Archimedes, everyone knew that 𝜋= 𝑎 𝑑 , but Archimedes came up with the formula 3 1 7 > 𝜋 > 3 10 71 which was a more accurate way to show Pi. Spheres and Cylinders He proved a sphere of the same radius is two-thirds the volume and surface of a cylinder. Integration To find the area of certain complicated shapes, Archimedes broke the shape up into several rectangles and added their areas together. Number System/The Sand Reckoner Archimedes tried to count how many grains of sand could fit in the universe. He created a new number system called the Sand Reckoner because the Greek number system didn’t go very high. Center of Gravity He used his geometry skills on physical objects, finding the center of gravity of planes.

Without Archimedes We wouldn’t… Have a more accurate equation for finding Pi, and we would have to measure circles to find it. Know how to find the center of gravity. Be able to find the area of complicated shapes. Know how to use volume and density.

His Death Archimedes had died in 212 BC at age 75 when Romans had captured Syracuse during the Second Punic War. There are several ideas of how Archimedes had died. It is suggested that he was working on a math problem while the Romans had stormed Syracuse and was killed by a Roman soldier after refusing to meet the Roman General, Marcellus because he needed to finish his problem first. Another suggestion of his death is that the Roman soldier found his mathematical instruments valuable and killed Archimedes.
