How do the workforce feel about Safety initiatives? Done to? Done with? Done by?

My Dad’s advice “If you don’t know the answer to a problem, ask the people that dig the holes. They have known the answers for 20 years, it’s just nobody has asked them.”

Advice I give my sons “If you don’t know the answer to a problem, ask the people that dig the holes. They have known the answers for 20 years, just nobody has asked them.” And “Ask them what their problems are before you ask for the answers!”

So what does all this mean for work staging and planning?

Work staging and planning We have followed the same approach We have listened to the experts who do things every day

Improved Planning and Lock Downs Access Haulage GRIP4Track Specification Work method 13

Improved Access High Output work in Wessex - what good really looks like: Everybody home safe everyday 10hrs access per night Adjacent line open working Signallers stop trains on request when all lines blocked is required Opening at 50 mph rather than 80mph 700 yards per night on jointed track 1,000 yards per night on CWR Every production record smashed Safety and performance go hand in hand Nottingham 37 day blockade Renewal of S&C in conjunction with the re-signalling of Nottingham as part of the EMSR 37 day blockade This is another stage in the ongoing collaborative working between Track Delivery and IP Signalling The materials costs are broadly the same under either delivery model (about 50% of the cost stack). Contractor delivered works for sites contained within the blockade are 62% cheaper following tender compared to the RT24 unit rate contract. Total cost of the Track delivered element within the EMRS project has reduced from £19m to £12.6million 37 point ends of S&C, 22 abandonments and 2.6 miles of track will be renewed. National Plant Exhibition Held at Long Marston in July Focus in innovation and solving problems faced by the wider track community Featured live demonstrations of track plant, seminars, and live demonstration of a conventional plain line track renewal Over 150 exhibitors Approx. 4,000 visitors Wigan 9 day blockade 2½ miles of track to renew 4 WCML junctions upgraded 18 miles of WCML under possession 27 point ends remodelled 61 engineering trains 865 engineering wagons 6,600 new sleepers 21,500 tonnes of ballast Tottenham mid-week S&C renewal Mid-week S&C renewal renewal Completed in 4 x 8 hour mid week night possessions compared to a long 27 hour + weekend block. 14
