The Berlin wall By Mary Worthing

Why was it built After WW2 East Germans were dissatisfied with the Communist life in east Berlin.

Why was it built They started to flee to the Democratic west

Why was it built In response they started to build a wall that encircled the west

Why was it built

It looked like…. The wall was 12 feet tall and 4 feet wide

Death Strip Was the land closest to the wall, it had soft sand (to show footprints) vicious dogs, trip wire machine guns, guard towers, and patrolling officers to shoot escapees at sight.

Death strip They literally took every precaution to keep east Germans from getting to the west

Escapees However , more than 5000 people escaped east Berlin, but 171 died trying

Ronald Reagan In 1987 president Reagan stood on the west side of the Berlin and demanded that Gorbachof tear down their wall!!!

The end of the Berlin wall Two years later east Germans decreed to tear down their wall , families that had been separated for decades were finally reunited.
