Your free time Advanced 2 Unit 10

Listen to their conversation Where do you think these people are? What is their relationship? What are they talking about? Listen to their conversation and check. What’s wrong with Ed? What does Kim suggest? Do you think Ed will find it easy to take his mind off of work?

What can you remember? ED: I can’t take it anymore. This job is really ______ to me. KIM: Hey, sounds to me you could _____ a break. ED: Are you _______ ? I’m ____ to my ears in paperwork. KIM: When was the last time you took some time ____ ? ED: Come to ____ of it, it’s been over a year. I was supposed to take off a ____ weeks in January, but it just got too busy around here. KIM: Then it sounds like a little R and R ____ do you some good. ED: You’re right. And anyway, I can always bring my laptop along and _____ up on my work. KIM: Listen, leave the laptop at home! You need to just take it ____ for a while.

Check your answers. ED: I can’t take it anymore. This job is really getting to me. KIM: Hey, sounds to me you could use a break. ED: Are you kidding? I’m up to my ears in paperwork. KIM: When was the last time you took some time off? ED: Come to think of it, it’s been over a year. I was supposed to take off a few weeks in January, but it just got too busy around here. KIM: Then it sounds like a little R and R would do you some good. ED: You’re right. And anyway, I can always bring my laptop along and catch up on my work. KIM: Listen, leave the laptop at home! You need to just take it easy for a while.

With a partner, explain the meaning of each of the following statements in blue. You may find them in your SB, page 111, ex D.

Are these statements similar to yours? “This job is really getting to me.” This job is creating a lot of stress for me. “Are you kidding?” You can’t be serious. 3. “I’m up to my ears in paperwork.” I have too much work to do. 4. “A little R and R would do you some good.” You would benefit from taking some time off. “I can catch up on my work.” I can get ahead with my work. “You need to just take it easy.” You need to take a break and relax.

How do you usually spend your free time? I hang out with other people. I spend my time alone. I take it easy. I find something exciting to do. I catch up on the chores I never have time for. I catch up on work. I use my time to learn something new. I sit around and worry about what I need to do. Check the statements that apply to you on page 111 and tell your partner.
