The French and Indian War a.k.a. The first REAL world war

Leading up to war 1754 – 3 countries had colonies in North America: Spain, France, Britain Spain – FL & Mexico France – from Louisiana north to Great Lakes & part of Canada Britain – the 13 colonies on the Atlantic Coast Disputes between France & Britain for 65 years

French and Indian War Began in 1754 – lasted 9 years Reasons for war: greed & fear Greed: each wanted most of the land in the New World to control the treasures hidden in it Fear: one country would gain more power than the other Britain - stronger Navy, allied with 6 tribes of Iroquois Confederacy France - stronger Army, allied with western tribes

Increasing Rivalry Britain & France claimed land around the Ohio River VA colonists received land grants for area, but France built forts on it 1753 – gov. of VA sent George Washington to warn the French that the area didn’t belong to them, French ignored them 1754 – Washington warned them again, this time he took the militia to Fort Duquesne to protect the area Many losses for the British followed

War Indians did not fight the same way as the British: they hid, they attacked in secret, they blended into the background War also happened in Canada with the capture of Quebec & Montreal 1758 – battle at Fort Duquesne again, British were victorious Treaty of Paris in 1763 – GA’s western boundary was set at the Mississippi River Proclamation of 1763 – GA’s southern boundary was set at the St. Mary’s River

Aftermath Cherokee, Creek Indians gave up all land between the Ogeechee & Savannah Rivers Also gave up coastal land New boundaries gave water access for shipping, good farmland, dense forests for timber & ships stores Look at maps on 143 & 146…compare them… What is the most major difference?
