ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS

WHAT IS AN ADJECTIVE?  An adjective is a word that describes or modifies a noun or pronoun. EXAMPLES: A big, red ball. The cute, huggable puppy. The tall, green tree. His huge, sharp teeth.

WHAT IS AN ADVERB?  An adverb is a word that describes or modifies a verb. EXAMPLES: Jose was quietly going out the door. Glendale was torn down slowly. Tony spoke slowly. Katie jumped high.

WHAT DOES AN ADJECTIVE AND ADVERB DO? An adjective describes a noun or a pronoun by telling “which one”, “what kind” or “how many”. An adverb tells us “when”, “where”, and “how”; about verbs, adjectives and even other adverbs.

EXAMPLES OF ADJECTIVES She wore a yellow sweater to the picnic. My bedroom was messy. She lost her blue and white blouse. Yellow describes the sweater by asking “what kind”. Messy describes the bedroom by asking “what kind”. Blue and white describes the blouse by asking “what kind”.

EXAMPLES OF ADVERBS David was extremely grumpy. The runner easily finished first. Joseph drove slowly to work. Extremely describes “how” grumpy he was. Easily describes “how” the runner finished the race. Slowly describes “how” he drove to work.
