Segregation and Social tensions American History

Goals Students will be able to: Terms to know: Asses the impact of Jim Crow Laws Compare the experience of European and Asian immigrants Compare different views on the African American Experience Analyze support for and resistance to civil rights for minorities Terms to know: Jim Crow Laws, poll tax, literacy test, grandfather clause, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Du Bois, Ida B. Wells

Jim Crow After power of the military districts in the south were returned to the states themselves, the south began to institute Jim Crow Laws These laws kept blacks and whites segregated Other laws like the poll tax, which required voters to pay to vote were instituted States also instituted literacy tests, that were supposed to measure ones ability to vote Grandfather clauses were also enacted, which allowed a person to vote as long as his ancestors had voted prior to 1866 In the court case of Plessy v Ferguson *1896*, segregation was upheld as constitutional

Opposition to injustice Booker T. Washington was a famous black leader during the late 19th century Washington stated that African Americans should not focus on trying to overturn Jim Crow Laws, but should just get used to this as normal He also felt that they should build up their economic resources and establish themselves as hardworking and honest citizens W.E.B. Du Bois earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1896 and often criticized Washington’s willingness to accommodate southern whites Du Bois argued that blacks should demand full and immediate equality and not limit themselves to vocational education as Booker T. Washington argued

Opposition to injustice Ida B. Wells also fought for African American justice Wells bought a newspaper, called it Free Speech, and wrote numerous articles that condemned the mistreatment of blacks She was run out of town by a mob but continued to fight against lynching in America

Women’s rights Susan B. Anthony felt betrayed by the Republican party This was because they had fought for racial equality, but not gender equality Susan B. Anthony, in an act of protest, voted illegally in 1872 and was arrested and ultimately convicted of her crime in federal court Despite here active activism, Susan B. Anthony was not successful with bringing about women’s suffrage during her lifetime
