Materials: Pencil Notebook Computer Bell work Reading, Notes, Video 1/6 Materials: Pencil Notebook Computer Bell work Reading, Notes, Video DO: Today we will continue learning about the history of Earth. DQ: You may use your notes to answer the following questions: 1. What is the first eon of earth’s history called? How did the Earth form? What kind of life appeared in the Precambrian? 4. What kind of life appeared in the Cambrian?

Answers What is the first eon of earth’s history called? Precambrian - Hadean How did the Earth form? Earth formed from the clumping of matter around the sun. What kind of life appeared in the Precambrian? Unicellular algae and bacteria formed and then multicellular organisms formed towards the end. What kind of life appeared in the Cambrian? An explosion of multicelluar life including marine animals and plants ( Ex: Trilobites, anomalocaridids)

Each partner will be assigned one of the following readings. You are required to individually take notes on your section. You will be sharing your notes with the rest of your group! So make sure you take good, accurate notes! X:\STUDENTS\7th grade\7C\Merritt\1st Period\Earth History\Earth History Reading Ordovician Silurian

Time Period Organism Definition Pre-cambrian Cyanobacteria Cambrian Trilobite anomalocaridids Ordovician Graptolites Conodonts Surlian Acanthodians

Paleozoic Era - Ordovician Period 488-444 mya diversification of marine organisms evolution of plants onto land. The Ordovician ended with a mass extinction probably caused by an ice age. Deep-water faunas, especially graptolites are common, colonial marine organisms Appearance of conodonts, marine fish-like predators Development of coral reefs Plants evolved onto land First major Paleozoic ice age.

Graptolites Colonial Organisms that looked like graphite hieroglyphs of the Egyptians

Nautilus

Conodonts- marine predators Hag fish Lamprey Fish

Paleozoic Era Silurian Period 444-416 mya The start of significant life on dry land Estuarine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems develop First Vascular Plants Wide and rapid spread of jawless fish Extensive coral reefs

Sea Scorpions

Acanthodians-spiny sharks

Terrestrial Arthropods Arachnids

Time Sequencing Practice Objectives: Students will place events in sequence and assign relative times to each event. Students will gain an understanding of relative and numerical time. Students will become familiar with the methods used by scientists to develop the Geologic Time Scale.   Geologic Timeline Format – ASSESSMENT GRADE Timeline must fit on the large-size construction paper Timeline must follow the flow map format. The timeline must be to scale and contain a key. Title top and center and all lines must be drawn with a ruler. ***Your name and period on the top, front, right hand corner*** Eon, Era, and Period should be labeled on the bottom. Time intervals must be even and appropriate for the range of time being represented. Make a rough draft or plan on a separate sheet of paper. The paper must have complete colored illustrations with backgrounds, color printed pictures, labels and information of organisms from the time period.  Pictures should include several landforms, plants, and animals in each time period  Majority of pictures must be hand drawn. Captions for each period must be typed. Captions must include the following: Climate (blue) Animals ( Red) Plants ( Green) Landforms ( yellow) Organize information so that the viewer can find different kinds of information easily. For example, all the information on plants is typed in green or on a green frame.
