AESS Board of Governors Meeting Education AESS Board of Governors Meeting April 22-23, 2016 Orlando, FL Kathleen A. Kramer VP Education, AESS

Objectives What are our long term strategic objectives? Improve existing AESS educational products and services. Increase reach of educational benefits and their use to attract and retain members Publicize the society’s educational benefits and services. How these objectives help to grow the AESS… Educational programs, along with publications and conferences, are a key element of the society’s interaction with its members. Educational programs benefit members locally, increase visibility and reputation where the program is delivered, and give local potential members a reason to join. Educational programs further interest and knowledge in the technical areas AESS exists to advance. Growth can mean increasing membership, but also could mean increasing revenue, influence and impact, or recognition. 12/6/2018

Initiatives What are our short term (1-2 year) initiatives? Distinguished Lecturers: improving coverage of technical and geographic interests while providing excellent programs to members Adding a Region 10 DL Increasing non-radar technical coverage Targeting under-served chapters/sections for DLs Mentoring Program Widening launch Achieving best practices in matching and guided, limited duration matches Increasing visibility Tutorials and Short Programs Provide a toolkit to chapters Increase use of or alter delivery of strong tutorials from library Provide CEUs (and assessment) Robert T. Hill Dissertation Continue to establish (first selection 2015) Radar Systems Panel Initiative

Highlights What positive outcomes have been achieved? Distinguished Lecturers: Candidates identified in Region 10. Region 10 receiving DLs. Targeting under-served chapters/sections and technical areas for DLs Updated process and materials including IEEE-AESS ppt template Seems to be significant reporting issue. How many expected? Mentoring Program Launched March 2016 Mentor/mentee pairings in San Diego and San Antonio Tutorials and Short Programs Cross-BoG efforts supporting supply of tutorials Assessment sample from Dale. Pilot short course from Joe RSP Initiative is being led within RSP by Charlish, Inggs, and Picciolo Planning aggregation of radar educational resources, including data sets, under AESS domain 12/6/2018

Distinguished Lectures Model for Success Implemented in recent years (Joe!) with 6 strategic objectives and implemented initiatives: Increase Activity - Introduce two-year term, monitor activity & review DL list annually [Technical Panel Alignment] Reduce Costs - Encourage speakers to present AESS DLs when compatible with other travel [Advertising] Enhance Accessibility - Improve geographic distribution of DLs, increase max AESS limit, AESS short-course initiative Standardize Procedure - DL request form to clearly define event details and explain DL guidelines Evaluate Benefit - Provide DL evaluation forms to measure benefit perceived by participants Promote AESS - Promotional slide-pack and brochures to promote AESS to members and new customers

Actions What actions are required to move forward? Distinguished Lecturers Proposal for a few new DLs through DL committee; feedback/terms on DLs. Need means to get data reported in past years -> Tackle reporting. Mentoring Program Need portable, independent platform. Custom solution needs specs and would require financial commitment Tutorials and Short Programs Need a tool kit for the chapter with financial guidelines Can get CEU preapproval. (Are DLs willing? Limited to their own chapters?) 12/6/2018
