Rome: Total War (… Not always…)

Crash Course Q’s What was one of the reasons that the Roman Republic was able to endure? What was the first Triumvirate? How did they rule? True or False. Caesar invaded his own country. Explain List at least 4 changes that Caesar made once he was in complete power. What did the death of Caesar lead to? What did his murderers want? When did Rome really become an Empire? Why?

Roman Military Large, organized Legions Organization of rank and file Utilized mobile tactics/infantry and cavalry Able to fight both large and small scale skirmishes Upon conquering territories would create “local administrators” At its height Roman empire would be the size, or bigger, of the continental US

The Roman Soldier Meant to be a mobile offensive and defensive juggernaut Well armored, had BOTH long range and close quarter training Could march upward of 20 or more miles daily and be battle ready Enemies often attacked at end of a days march before bedding down! (why?) Carried on average 60-70lbs of added weight Meant to be tough and well conditioned, high grain diet with carbs (ENERGY!!!)– Proteins were a treat!

Basic Rank and File (. disclaimer Basic Rank and File (*disclaimer* Best assumptions of rank equivalent imperfectly done by Mr. Cabrera) Ceasar (General) Consul (Major General) Legatus (Colonel) Tribune (Major) Praefectus (Prefects) Praetorians Centurions (Captain) Lower ranks: Infantry Archery Auxillary

Outside Invaders… For centuries leading to its downfall Rome experienced many various outside invasions and was actually sacked (taken/looted) multiple times until its fall in 476ce Attila the Hun (“Scourge of God”) – From Asia Germanic invasions (Gauls/Visigoths/Ostrogoths) Hannibal of Carthage--- North Africa Crossed the Alps with elephants to attack Rome!

End Activity- Check off with notes for credit Briefly look up the outside invaders and provide further details and historical analysis for each. Be sure to focus on key figures and events to discuss each area. Provide 5 bullets of pertinent/major info for each 1- Attila the Hun 2- Germanic invaders (Gauls/Visigoths/Ostrogoths) 3- Hannibal of Carthage (be sure to specifically discuss Punic Wars) - Battle of Carthage???
