Year 6 Curriculum Map – Autumn Term 1 Why was the Islamic Civilization around AD900 known as the ‘Golden Age’? English Art & Design Computing As readers we are reading Tales from the Arabian Nights edited by Andrew Lang. The book will form the basis of our Guided Reading sessions where we will explore the themes and language in depth. We will be focusing on acquiring new vocabulary to use in our writing. As writers, we will be building up writing toolkits to write a new voyage of Sinbad the Sailor. We will we collecting information throughout our curriculum lessons in order to plan and write a report about the Early Islamic Civilisation. As ICT technicians we will be beginning to look at coding and immersing ourselves in the language of computer coders. As artists we will recognise and compare different examples of Islamic Art before creating our own Geometric designs in the same style. Geography RE As geographers we will be able to locate the areas we are studying and discuss the geographical features of cities and their locations. In RE, to link with our theme we will be looking at the Muslim Faith and comparing it to Christianity. Maths As mathematicians, we will be consolidating the skills acquired in Year 5 alongside addressing new concepts. We will begin by looking at the value of number and using rounding to make sensible estimations when completing calculations. Before half term we will also ensure that our knowledge of written methods for addition and subtraction are secure and apply these skills to problem solving and reasoning scenarios. French Music As linguists we will be revising the basic vocabulary we have learned in previous years – including making introductions, greetings, numbers to 100 and following classroom instructions. As musicians we will be looking at rhythm and understanding how to notate rhythms before composing and performing our own. Science As historians we will learn about the significance and importance of Baghdad in helping to build and shape this early civilisation. We will study some of the major discoveries made by Islamic scholars Including their influence on our education and health care system. History As scientists, we will be looking at light. We will learn how light travels and how this enables us to see. We will work scientifically and collaboratively to investigate refraction, reflection and bend light. Prince William Award PE We are very excited to be taking part in this new project. It focuses on Personal Development, Relationships, Working Together, Community and the Environment. As athletes, we be either completing swimming to ensure we meet the national curriculum objectives or we will be looking at athletic skills such as running, throwing and jumping events.
