What is a rain forest? Rainforests are places where half of the animals live. There are lots of plants, trees, and many different kinds of flowers. Their conditions are very hot and wet.

Location of the rainforest All rainforests are located near the equator. The tropical rain forests are a special kind of forest that only grow in the tropics.

Emergent Layer The emergent layer is where the tallest trees grow. Some of the animals live there like the harpy eagle, sloth, butterflies, and the parrot.

The canopy layer is where most of the animals live The canopy layer is where most of the animals live. Some of the trees rise more than 250 feet above the forest floor.The canopy layer is a sunny place were flowers bloom. Spider monkeys, frogs, birds, sloths, and the jaguar live in the canopy. Understory Layer The under story has more shade than the canopy layer. The vines in the under story layer can stretch farther than two football fields. Below the canopy layer is the under story layer.

Forest Floor The forest floor is very dark because the trees block the sun from the under story.There are lots of insects crawling on the forest floor like the spider and the centipede.

Deforestation Deforestation is when people take down the rain forest trees to sell as wood. Sometimes people burn the trees to have more space for land. If you cut down the rainforest there will be no more oxygen.

People of the Rain Forest The people of the rainforest don’t destroy the rainforest but they hunt some animals like the pig and fish. About 200 million people live in the rainforest today.
