Imperial Visualisations Developing Interactive Visualisations for Education Department of Physics Dr Caroline Clewley, Dr Jonathan Eastwood, Prof Peter Török, Prof Dimitri Vvedensky & the UROP Team

Imperial Visualisations: visualisations.ph.ic.ac.uk Aim: to enhance conceptual understanding of abstract concepts. Method: visualisations in two “layers”: Javascript/HTML for low-threshold exploration Jupyter Notebook for deeper insight & adaptation Outcome: an ever-expanding set of visualisations together with implementation guidelines and tools to create further visualisations.

A student-centred project Design Development Implementation Evaluation

Lecturers on targeted courses Students as partners Design Development Implementation Evaluation 15 UROP students Lecturers on targeted courses

Investigating efficacy Implementation Lectures Tutorials Homework Coursework Design Developmen Implementation Evaluation Evaluation Usage statistics Interviews Observations Final survey

Full circle next summer. What next? We will aim to create a platform to easily adapt visualisations from Jupyter notebooks. We will integrate the visualisations with computing labs and MOOCs. A new UROP team with mixed expertise will work on further visualisations. They could be working for you!

Call for expressions of interest Does your department have a lecture course with abstract concepts student struggle to grasp? Is the lecturer keen to innovate on their course and willing to engage over summer? Email Caroline: c.clewley@imperial.ac.uk UROP students from your department can work with us to create visualisations, and bring back expertise to create more in following years.
