STUDENT SYLLABUS HISTORY, CIVICS AND ECONOMICS michael.musto@apsva.us (703) 228-5900   Students will use the lens of civics and economics to explore the history of the United States and understand ideas and events that strengthened the nation. The content for this course relates to the history of the United States from 1865 to the present. Students will use the skills of historical and geographical analysis and continue to learn concepts in civics and economics while studying United States history.   This class is designed to examine America from Reconstruction to the present. It is my goal to help the student explore life in the United States, demonstrate an understanding of where and how Americans lived, uncover their motives for change, and examine whether or not their attempts were successful. The units will be presented in chronological order, but not in isolation of each other. History is an ongoing process, and the material must be linked in order to enhance a student's understanding of the relationship between the past, the present, and the future.

Course Description:   IBMYP individuals and societies units have been designed to add a global dimension to student learning, connect social studies to other curricular areas, and allow students to improve their communication skills. In keeping with the International Baccalaureate philosophy, a major aim of this course is to foster within students an understanding of the interdependence that connects them (and all humans) with their environment, and a sense of responsibility and stewardship toward the world around them.
