MRC - Environment Institute - MRG More specifically the coastal and marine ecosystem state and impact studies have been focused on: - C, N, P cycling in semi-enclosed sea basins - Primary productivity and limiting nutrients - Phytoplankton speciation/isolation/cultivation - Bioassays with phytoplankton on nutrient consumption and DOC/CH production - Chemical pollution (water/sediment/biota) - Ecotoxicology (Biomarkers and toxicity tests) - Macro-benthic species diversity and abundance Pollution, eutrophication, biodiversity loss Projects (2006-2012) - # of RD and IR projects: 23 + 1 Scale and type of RD projects: 9 integrated, 13 small ; 14 national, 9 international 1 infrastructure (RV Acquisition) - Budget : 9.5 M € (RD) + 8 M € (IR) national RD funding: 95 % international RD funding: 5 % Expertise - Physical oceanography and ocean modelling, Chemical oceanography, Biological oceanography (upper pelagic system and benthic) Sediment chemistry - Chemotaxanomic approach to characterize phytoplankton assemblages - Chemical and biological investigations on mucus/mucilage aggregates Tools and Products: - M & A of coastal waters – Classification - ICZM – ESE systems approach - Management of accidental pollution -oil spills and ballast waters : Decision support systems with IT contribution - Development and utilization of environmental and simulation models - Ocean-ecosystem numerical modelling Sea-going experience: Black Sea ,Marmara Sea and the Straits, Mediterranean Baltic, N-E and S-W Atlantic Ocean Southern Ocean and Antarctica 2 2

Recent EU-Funded Projects Seadatanet II: Pan-European Ocean Data Management (Partner) Micro B3: Microbial Biodiversity, Bioinfo and Biotech (Partner) EuroFleets2: New Operational Steps Towards an Alliance of European Research Fleets (Negotiation stage - Partner) MISIS: MSFD Guiding Improvements in the Black Sea Integrated Monitoring System (DG-ENV, Subcontractor) Hot Black Sea: Integrated Hotspots Management and Saving the Living Black Sea Ecosystem (CBC-Partner)

MRC Potential Contributions to Call 6.1-1 “… regional and global scale modeling capabilities, laboratory and field experiments and observation systems...” Regional and basin scale ocean-ecosystem modelling experience Multidisciplinary research staff A regional class R/V (41.2m) to be commissioned early 2013 The location of MRC provides a testbed to build an ‘integrated  marine knowledge-base’ (i.e. Med, Aegean, Marmara-TSS, Black Sea) Close connection with existing networks and extensive experience with EU directives Substantially involved in regional networks and collaborative projects
