Apartheid in South Africa

South Africa: A lovely place with a sad history A headland on the South African coast near Cape Town, the Cape of Good Hope is situated at the point where warm currents from the Indian Ocean converge with cool waters from the Antarctic Ocean, and it is known for its stormy seas and weather. Vegetation on the Cape is characterized by low shrubs and grass.

ROOTS OF APARTHEID APARTHEID: Apartheid was a social philosophy which enforced racial, social, and economic segregation on the people of South Africa. Legislation was the backbone of Apartheid Laws were enacted which: defined a person's race, separated the races in terms of where they could live, travel, work, spend their free time, and introduced a separate system of education for Blacks

1950’s – 90’s How Apartheid affected South African Blacks Blacks in South Africa had little to no social contact with whites Schools, hospitals, neighborhoods, bathrooms, beaches were segregated. The best land was saved for whites blacks made up 70% of the population and received only a small percentage of the land This led to South Africa being isolated from most nations economically for many years. Segregated beach and bathroom in South Africa

Disproportionate Treatment

African National Congress The African National Congress (ANC) was founded in 1912 by South African blacks who wanted to fight for their rights. In 1949, Nelson Mandela emerged as a leader on the ANC Mandela was later imprisoned by the white minority for leading the struggle to end Apartheid

1994 and Beyond In 1994, South Africans voted Nelson Mandela as president of South Africa In 1996, apartheid officially ended when the South African government approved a new constitution that guarantees the rights of all citizens
