THE CORNELL NOTE TAKING SYSTEM How to take Notes. THE CORNELL NOTE TAKING SYSTEM

Set Up Your Class Journal: Leave the 2-3 sheets of your spiral notebook free to be used as a Table of Contents. Number your pages front and back. Your table of contents should be set up as follows: Example Table of Contents Title Date Page Number 1. How to take notes. 8/30/17 4 2. Lab Safety 8/31/17 6

Left Side of Your Class Journal Layout your 1st page of your day’s work as follows: Page number in the upper left corner or upper right corner of your sheet. That day’s date under the page number. Title on the first page only. The objective for the day written from the board. The engage question written below and answered. All work to be shown if it is a problem to be worked out. The rest of that page is for work done in class, or other things I might have you do during class.

Note Side of your Class Journal Arrange on the note side of your journal as follows: Cue Column: (2-2.5 inches) Used to reduce ideas and facts to concise summaries. Note Taking Column: (about 7 inches) Used to record the lecture, examples, and other items as fully and meaningfully as possible. Summary: One should leave enough space at the bottom of each note sheet to allow space to write a summary of your notes.
