Introduction – The Basics The programme targets young people aged 14 – 24 years old The programme is designed by young people to fit their own interests and abilities Throughout the programme participants can build confidence, experience new things, develop new skills and friendships

Introduction – The Reason Why The Award isn’t just about the empowerment of the individual, however it is a core part of the programme and is one of the major expected outcomes of participation but the big picture is community well-being and the elements that empower the individual are broadly the same as those that contribute to community well-being. On the next slide we look at those things that contribute to both individual and community well-being.

Introduction – The Reason Why: 2 During our work with Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award participants it is important that this is not viewed as just a tick box exercise. During the time a participant is engaged with the programme we need to address issues such as: Civic and Human Rights (Work within the Treaty of Waitangi in a spirit of Partnership, Participation and Protection) Culture and Identity (Support both of these to ensure participants feel happy to express their culture and identity without feeling judged or in deficit) Safety and Security (This is physical, emotional and psychological safety) Social Connectedness (The Award can connect very diverse communities) Leisure and Recreation (Work/Life Balance)

Introduction – The Reason Why: 3 The Award, although already aligned to community well-being outcomes, when delivered with the previous elements in mind and as an embedded part of our Kaupapa (principle or policy), can have a positive effect on a whole community. This is done by bringing together the diverse elements, cultures and personalities within the community through understanding, mutually positive behaviours, and the interconnectedness of individuals who work together to nurture, heal and develop those around them.

The Award has 3 levels…. BRONZE SILVER GOLD

…and 4 sections to each level Skills Service Physical Recreation Adventurous Journey

Time Requirements for Sections + Adventurous Journey + Residential Project at Gold Level

See next slide for examples Direct Entrants A Gold participant who has not completed any of the previous awards (Bronze and Silver) is known as a “Direct Participant” and must complete sufficient practice trips for the Adventurous Journey plus the Bronze and Silver training in addition to Gold training before going to the qualifying trip They will also have to do an extra 26 weeks in whichever section they choose as their longest section See next slide for examples

An Award Leader’s Responsibilities Registrations All Registrations are via the Online Record Book (ORB) https://www.onlinerecordbook.org Separate training is available for ORB, contact us for details Participants currently pay the registration fee to the Award Unit

The Bullet Points.. Bronze and Silver Awards are checked on the ORB by the Award Leader and processed to us for validation Completed Gold Awards are checked by the Award Leader on the ORB but are also audited by National Office and once checked and signed off the badges are sent out Gold Awardees can choose to receive their certificates by post or at an Award Ceremony in either Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin or Christchurch

Recording Achievement All Award activity is recorded on ORB and needs to be approved by the Award Leader before the activity commences. Registrations cost $86.25 including gst at Bronze and Silver and $115.00 at Gold
