The Crystal Palace and Various Exhibitions By: Pedro Medina and Melissa

The massive glass house was 1848 feet long by 454 feet wide. Went from plans to grand opening in just nine months. The building was moved and re-erected in an enlarged form at Sydenham in south London. It was eventually destroyed by fire.

This "bigger and better" building was divided into a series of courts depicting the history of art and architecture from ancient Egypt through the Renaissance, as well as exhibits from industry and the natural world.

The building was used to showcase technological achievements in a grandiose and innovative way. Over 13,000 exhibitions were displayed and viewed by over 6.2 million visitors to the exhibition. The Great Exhibition was used to show how the industrial revolution was propelling Britain into the greatest power of the time. The profits from the event allowed for the foundation of public works such as the Albert Hall, the Science Museum, the National History Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Hiram Powers The Greek Slave Was almost certainly the most famous work of sculpture in the second half of the nineteenth century.
