Falling Angels Jiri Kylian

01 02 03 Falling Angels What connotations come from this title? Write down your ideas on your OneNote under the Appreciation Tab with a new Page of Falling Angels Brainstorm. 02 Share your ideas. 03

It’s a Piece About our Profession Kylian’s choreographic style dominantly focuses on issues that occur within our society. Falling Angel’s (1989) is a work about femineity and is one of six works from his ‘Black and White Ballets’. In Year 12, you will be studying another work from this series, Sarabande (1990), which looks at masculinity. Each work in this series has a minimalistic approach with setting, however sends a very powerful message.

1980’s society Think about what the expectations for women were in the 1980’s. With a subheading of Expectations on your OneNote, note your ideas.

Context Kylian’s work Falling Angels depicts how females in this time aimed for perfection but faced with various stages to the human female psyche and aspects of ambition, seduction, pregnancy, birth, death, motherhood and self- awareness. What do you think this image could suggest?

Watch the Work https://www.numeridanse.tv/en/dance-videotheque/falling-angels

5 minute brainstorm Questions to help you write; Did you see the aspects of femineity stated? How did the movement represent this? What was noted about the use of costuming? Use of lighting? Groupings/unison/canon? On the same OneNote page, with a subheading of First Impressions, spend 5 minutes of analysing what you think about the work in terms of what we have discussed already.

Appreciation Syllabus As we analyse Dance Works from here on in, we need to be aware of the components of the syllabus. The syllabus for Year 11 Dance states that you need to understanding the following when analysing dance; first impression (subjective) description (formal/structural) interpretation (relationships) evaluation (informed criticism) Use the ‘Falling Angels Analysis Table’ document to gather your ideas on the four points above.

Working towards the HSC As we are constantly preparing ourselves for the HSC, analysing a work in terms of the HSC guidelines is essential. Take a look at how the HSC syllabus is extended; http://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/ portal/nesa/11-12/stage-6-learning- areas/stage-6-creative-arts/dance-syllabus The HSC syllabus points are included on the ‘Falling Angels Analysis Table’ document.

Falling Angels Revisiting the components that you looked at in your weekly work, watch the work again and take detail notes on each: movement spatial elements dynamic elements aural elements dancers setting and environment

Applying your knowledge so far… Using descriptive language – dot point what you see and interpret from this image. Use your knowledge of the elements of dance to describe the movement and how it assists in conveying the concept. Note, appreciation has similar aspects of compositional skills. OneNote – Image Analysis subheading. Once you have your dot points, begin to form analytical sentences.

Repeat the process – Image 2.

Analytical Paragraph How does Falling Angels communicate the pressures placed upon women within society? For this activity, use the two images you have just analysed to write ONE body paragraph. Key IDEAS; Paragraph structure is key – thesis statement, explain, example, repeat (x4), link A thesis statement needs to address the question AND a key issue/theme from the work. Your examples need to be in detail and provide a visual image on the movement created.
