Presentation transcript:

Identifying Parts of an equation Standard: A.SSE.1 (DOK2): Interpret expressions that represents a quantity in terms of its content Essential Question: How can I describe the different parts of an equation/expression in terms of a given situation?

Coefficient Used to Multiply the Variable Example 9x (9 is the coefficient)

Variable The unknown value we are trying to solve Example: 9x (x is the variable)

Constant The number by itself without a variable 2 is a constant

Operator A symbol that tells you what to do (Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide)

Terms Terms are part of an expression or an equation separated by a “+” sign or a “-” sign.

Expression An expression is a group of terms separated by a addition sign or a subtraction sign. There are different types of expressions such as binomial or trinomial.

Equation A statement saying that two things are equal to each other. Without an equal sign, you only have an expression.
