Dividing Fractions Chapter 6 Section 6.5

Objective Students will divide algebraic fractions

Concept To divide by a real number, you multiply by its reciprocal (keep the first fraction, flip the second fraction). You use this same rule to divide algebraic fractions.

Concept Division Rule for Fractions a ÷ c = a * d b d b c

Example 5/8 ÷ 2/9

Example x / 2y ÷ xy / 4

Example 18 / x2 – 25 ÷ 24 / x + 5

Example x2 + 3x – 10 / 2x + 6 ÷ x2 – 4 / x2 – x – 12

Concept To simplify an expression that involves more than one operation, follow the order of operations 1. Simplify grouping symbols 2. Simplify powers 3. Simplify product & quotient left to right 4. Simplify sum & difference left to right

Example (2x/y)3 ÷ x/y2 * x/4
