INFORMATION & COMMUNCATIONS TECHNOLOGY … is using a computer to process data into information so that it is useful and can be shared. Then decisions can be made. INPUT PROCESS OUTPUT STORAGE Mr Hanson www.mrhanson.org

Lesson Aims: Review manual input devices Investigate further input devices Understand some principles of effective data capture Understand the purpose of validation Investigate validation rules in spreadsheets

List all the types of manual computer input devices that you know…

Manual Input Devices Keyboard Mouse Touch screen Joystick Digital camera Scanner Graphics tablet Microphone Light pen

Direct Input Devices – They are automated, so there are less mistakes, and they save time Optical mark reader (OMR) Optical character reader (OCR) Magnetic ink character recognition (MICR)

Bar code Magnetic stripe Sensor Data logging

The type of situation will dictate the most suitable method Then you can save time Save money Reduce mistakes Then your data will be accurate and complete!

Which is the best method? To read car registrations for the London congestion charge zone? To measure the overnight temperature? To mark 1000 multi-choice exams? To open a door? To issue a library book? To read passport application forms?

The best method for the situation will reduce the input errors. We can use VALIDATION RULES to reduce errors. Validation = to establish correctness.

So in your spreadsheet project, you can use a number of different validation rules to make sure that only valid data is entered into the cells.
