Section 1.1-Why Work Matters Essential Question Why do people work?

What is work? Work is any useful activity.

What are the reasons why people work? To earn money. To be around other people. To help others. To feel good about yourself.

People Work to Earn Money. Money is needed to pay for things that you need and want. Needs are the following: Food and housing Transportation Medical care Education

People Work to Earn Money (cont.) Wants are things that you can live without. Luxuries are extra things that help to make life fun but cost money. Ex. A boat, season tickets to the Buccaneers, etc.

People Work to be Around Others It is human nature to want to be around others. You make friends at work. You share the same interests with others by doing similar jobs and having similar experiences in the workplace.

People Work to Help Others People feel good about themselves when they can help others. There are 150 million jobs in the United States that help others.

People Feel Good About Themselves Having a job gives you a sense of self-worth. You feel proud when you do a job well. You feel valued by others and have confidence. Confidence is the belief that you can do well.

Work Includes Jobs, Occupations, and Careers A job is work you do for pay. An occupation is the type of work you do to earn a living. People can change jobs but stay in the same occupation A career is all the related jobs you do during your life.

Career Occupation Job

Work Will be a Large Part of Your Identity Identity is the way other people know you. By what you do for a living (job, occupation, career). By the choices you make in life-your actions.

Lifestyle Lifestyle is the way you spend your time, energy, and money.

The Six Parts of Your Lifestyle Family Friends Leisure-your free time. Health Spirituality-the search for meaning or purpose to life. Work This is the biggest part of your lifestyle because as an adult you will spend most of your time working.

Lifestyle Pattern A lifestyle pattern shows the importance of each part of your lifestyle. Some parts rank higher than others. Everyone has a different lifestyle pattern. Work affects your lifestyle. Time-commuting (going to and from work). Money (different jobs have different rates of pay). You need to plan your work to fit your lifestyle.

Conclusion-Why do people work? To earn money. To be around other people. To help others. To feel good about yourself.

Math in the World of Work Figuring Hours Worked Figure It Out   Today you arrive at work at 8:30 a.m. You take lunch from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Then you worked from 1:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. How many hours and minutes have you worked?

Answer to problem. Step 1  Calculate how long you worked before lunch. Subtract the earlier time (the time you got to work) from the later time (the time you left for lunch). Step 2  Calculate the time you worked after lunch. Step 3  Add the two times together. This gives you the answer to the question.

Steps Completed Before lunch -8:30 AM-12:30 PM=4hours Lunch-12:30 PM-1:00 PM=30 min. (you do not add this to your time because they do not pay you for lunch). After lunch-1:00-5:30 PM=4hours and 30 min 4 hours + 4 hours and 30 min.=8 hours and 30 min. Do not add the 30 min. for lunch to the 8 hours and 30 min. So, you worked a total of 8 hours and 30 minutes.

Section 1.2-Today’s Workplace Essential Question What does today’s workplace look like?

The World of Work is Changing Changes affect the kinds of jobs you can choose. Changes affect the way you do your job.

The Service Industry is Growing Businesses sell goods and services. Goods are objects such as groceries, cars, and clothing. Services are activities like transportation, education, and health care.

What are the types of jobs in the service industry? Waiter Police officer Health care technician

Teamwork is Becoming More Important A team is a group of people who have a common goal. Many jobs today work in teams. Everybody does their fair share!

The Workforce is Becoming More Diverse The workforce is all the people who have jobs or are looking for jobs. It is growing and changing. Diverse means varied and different. Ethnically diverse (races or cultures)

Workers Need New Skills to Succeed Employers want workers with excellent skills. Skills are abilities to do specific tasks. Employers do not want to provide much training today.

Workers Need to Be Flexible Flexibility is the ability to change when the world around you changes. This is not the type of flexibility we are talking about.

Workers Need Technology Skills Today, technology is in almost every kind of job. Technology is knowledge and tools that make it possible to do new things.

Equal Opportunity Equal Opportunity is fair treatment for everyone. Workers are chosen for jobs based on their skills, not because of how they look or who they are. It is the law.

Women and Men Have Equal Opportunities There use to be a time where certain jobs were just for men or just for women. That is not the case today. Give me some examples!

People With Disabilities Have Equal Opportunities People with disabilities have more career choices than ever before. A disability is a long-lasting impairment that limits a major life activity: Caring for yourself Walking Reading Learning

Job Accommodations Job accommodations are things that help workers with disabilities do their job. Examples A special desk for someone who is in a wheelcair.

Accommodations for Job Applicants Employers must give job applicants accommodations when applying. Ex. If a person has limited sight, the employer must provide documents with larger print so that person can have an equal opportunity when applying. FYI-Job applicant is a person who is applying for the job.

Conclusion-What does today’s workplace look like? It has become more service oriented. Teamwork is important. It is becoming more diverse. Workers need to be more skills and must be flexible. Workers need to be technological savvy. Equal opportunity is a must. Accommodations for people with disabilities is a must.

Math in the World of Work Pricing Services Figure It Out  A carpet cleaner gives you two options. He can clean all your carpet for $199, or he can charge you $0.50 per square foot of carpet. Your home has 320 square feet of carpet. Which option is cheaper?

Answer to Problem Step 1  Calculate the cost of sq. ft. for Option 2. Multiply the cost per square foot of carpet by the number of square feet of carpet. Step 2  Compare the two options. Which one is cheaper?

Steps Completed 320 Sq. Ft. X $0.50=$160.00 This is cheaper than $199.00
