Presentation transcript:

September 11, 2014 SWBAT: distinguish the difference between similes and metaphors and how they help the reader better understand the character Maria. Initial Activity: How does the use of Spanish help the reader understand how Maria combines her past and her present? Write 1-2 sentences to answer the question.

Word of the day: Endure: to be in a difficult situation without complaining. Example: We may have to endure rain and bugs on our camping trip.

What is a simile? What is a metaphor?

Example: The soccer player is like a tiger on the field. A simile is a comparison of two unlike things using the words like or as. Example: The soccer player is like a tiger on the field. A metaphor compares two unlike things by stating that one is the other. Example: The soccer player is a tiger on the field.

How do similes and metaphors in the poem help the reader better understand Maria? Find the simile or metaphor: Group 1: The simile the author uses about Maria Alegre is ________. Group 2: The metaphor the author uses about Maria Alegre is _____. Group 3: The simile the author uses about Maria Triste is _________. Group 4: The metaphor the author uses about Maria Triste is ______.

Work Period: In small groups we will re-read the first half of Call Me Maria from pages 11-16. Each group will be given one question/task to answer as you read through the text again. We will share out upon completion. Group 1: Summarize Maria’s thoughts and feeling on page 11. Group 2: What does Maria want to accomplish during her mother’s visit? Find her wish in the story. Group 3: Write one example of what the “evil tongues” say about Mami on page 15. Group 4: How does the setting outside of Maria’s home affect her actions?

Summary: Today we discussed similes and metaphors. Brainstorm an example of a simile or metaphor with a partner. We will share out as a whole group. You have 3 minutes.

Homework: Vocabulary quiz on words from Call Me Maria, tomorrow.
