Example: The soccer player is like a tiger on the field. A simile is a comparison of two unlike things using the words like or as. Example: The soccer player is like a tiger on the field. A metaphor compares two unlike things by stating that one is the other. Example: The soccer player is a tiger on the field.

Work Period: In small groups we will re-read the first half of Call Me Maria from pages 11-16. Each group will be given one question/task to answer as you read through the text again. We will share out upon completion. Group 1: Summarize Maria’s thoughts and feeling on page 11. Group 2: What does Maria want to accomplish during her mother’s visit? Find her wish in the story. Group 3: Write one example of what the “evil tongues” say about Mami on page 15. Group 4: How does the setting outside of Maria’s home affect her actions?
