Ephesians Class Schedule 3/11/18 Eph 1_20_23 R. Henderson

19b These* are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might 20a  which He brought about in Christ,   20b when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21  far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22  And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23  which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. * hope of His calling, riches of the glory & surpassing greatness of His power

The exaltation of Christ - He raised Him from the dead - He seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. - He put all things in subjection under His feet, - He gave Him as head over all things to the church, which (the church) is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

20b when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, when 1st - He (God the Father) raised Him from the dead raised – egeirō - of "raising" the dead, -Gal 1:1,1 Thess 1:10 "from the dead" – literally is "out from among the dead.“ other verses: --- Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father (Rom 6:4) the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead Rom 8:11 When New Testament writers wish to express --- the greatness of His power, they point to His resurrection and exaltation into the place of highest authority McCalley This power is available to us now - Phil. 3:10; Col. 1:11

20b when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 2nd - (He) seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly lit: having seated Him – kathizō – to cause to sit down Mark 16:19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. Hebrews 1:3b When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, Hebrews 12:2b who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. at His right hand - God not only raised His Son from the grave but exalted Him to the throne. McCalley

20b when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, in the heavenly – in or above heaven, existing in heaven, the heavenly regions; i.e., the abode of God and angels (6 times in Ephesians) Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, and Eph 2:6 we learned from these verses that our position is “in the heavenly” in Christ Jesus now we learn that Christ is at the Father’s right hand in “the heavenly” therefore our position is in Christ Jesus at the Father’s right hand “in the heavenly”

21  far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. This is the magnitude of Christ’s seating!! far above - over and above - used of rank or dignity – see Eph. 4:10, Heb 7:26 all rule – or lit: every first – see 1 Cor 15:24 authority - exousia - authority, right, liberty, power to do something - Col 2:10 power - dynamis - power, authority, might - spoken of omnipotent sovereignty as due to God dominion - kratos - "force, strength, might," more especially "manifested power”

21  far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. every name that is named - every name that is constantly being named (Wuest) see Phil 2:8-9 “Let any name be uttered, whatever it is, Christ is above it; it is more exalted than that which the name uttered affirms” (Meyer) not only in this age but also in the one to come it speaks of this present state of things, and in the words, "but also in that which is to come," of the future state of things – (Wuest)

22  And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 3rd - He put all things in subjection under His feet (ref: PS 8:6) subjection - hypotassō - primarily a military term, “to rank under”; therefore - to put in subjection, to subject – see Luke 2:51 and 10:17 parallel verses: 1 Cor 15:27 For HE HAS PUT ALL THINGS IN SUBJECTION UNDER HIS FEET. But when He says, "All things are put in subjection," it is evident that He is excepted who put all things in subjection to Him. – also Heb 2:8 Adam lost his lordship over creation when he sinned, but Jesus gained lordship over creation by His obedience (Eph 1:10; Rom. 5:12-21). Constable

22  And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 4th - (He) gave Him as head God has given Him who is head of all things to the church. (Greek text order) gave - didōmi - to place or to put; “The word given (didomi) emphasizes the loving beneficent bestowal.” McCalley head - kephalē - metaphorically, of the authority or direction: 1. of God in relation to Christ, 2. of Christ in relation to believing men, 3. of the husband in relation to the wife, 4. of Christ in relation to the Church Headship involves the ideas of authority and unity. McCalley see Eph. 4:15; Eph. 5:23; Col. 1:18

22  And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, over all things to the church all things – pas – everything, none excluded He is head over ever aspect of the church church - ekklēsia - from ek, "out of," & klēsis, "a calling"- the whole company of the redeemed throughout the present era Christ called it “My church” in Matt 16:18 verse 23 will tell more about what the church is This means the church has overcoming ability because her leader is head of all things. McCalley

22b and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23  which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. now we have a definition in verse 23 which is His body Therefore “the church is His body” The church is not an organization but an organism Eph 5:23b as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. (Himself the Savior of [His] body*) also in the following verses: 1 Cor 12:27 Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it. Col 1:18a He is also head of the body, the church; * Amplified Bible

22b and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23  which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. the fullness of Him who fills all in all the fullness of the One who constantly is filling all things with all things. (Wuest) fullness - plērōma - to make full, fill, fill up - it is thus used of the grace and truth manifested in Christ, John 1:16; of all His virtues and excellences, Eph. 4:13 The church is the fullness of Christ probably in the sense that He fills for Himself (middle voice in Greek) the church with blessings (Eph. 4:10-11). THE CHURCH: HER ORGANIZATION & ORDINANCES THE BIBLICAL MODEL VIEWS THE CHURCH AS AN ORGANISM The church (“called out ones”) is the body of Christ - Rom 12:5; Eph 2:16 Every believer is a member of Christ’s body - 1 Cor 12:27 Jesus Christ is the head of the body - Eph 1:22; 5:23 Each “local church” is a microcosm of the body of Christ (Local Church) ( Elders = Under- Shepherds ) MEMBERS BODY OF CHRIST THE CHURCH (Local Church) ( Elders = Under- Shepherds ) MEMBERS (Local Church) ( Elders = Under- Shepherds ) MEMBERS JESUS CHRIST HEAD (Local Church) ( Elders = Under- Shepherds ) MEMBERS (Chief Shepherd) (Local Church) ( Elders = Under- Shepherds ) MEMBERS (Local Church) ( Elders = Under- Shepherds ) MEMBERS / 6 APRIL 2003

THE CHURCH: HER ORGANIZATION & ORDINANCES Analogy of Human Body & Christ’s Body (The Church) 1 Cor 12:12-31; Rom 12:3-8 Many members but they function as one body Physically: Born with a body and its members Spiritually: Born by the Holy Spirit into Christ’s body as a member -1Cor 12:13 Members of the body differ - 1 Cor 12:15-18; Rom 12:4-6 Their function & gifts are different God designed it that way Just as each member of the human body is content with its function - so should we be - 1 Cor 12:14-24 Total dependence between members-1 Cor 12:21,22; Rom 12:5 No exaltation of one member over another - 1 Cor 12:22-25 Because of their function or gift Otherwise divisions occur God in His grace has gifted every member - 1Cor 12:7; 28-30 God’s wonderful goal for the members - Eph 4:16 To function in the body as they are gifted Results in the edification of the body in love The local church : Needs to encourage the exercise of spiritual gifts The dynamic is not the elders - but the Holy Spirit / 6 APRIL 2003
