MATHEMATICS SAMPLE ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BASED UPON THE END OF YEAR ASSESSMENTS. . .

PARCC PARCC stands for the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers. More than 15 million students will take this test in the 2014-2015 school year, and I wanted to create common professional development for our staff.

What We Know . . . Starting in 2014-2015, students in grades 3-8 will take two forms of the PARCC Assessment in both mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy. Performance Based Assessment PBA (75% of the way through the school year) End of Year Assessment EOY (90% of the way through the school year)

More Information . . . More information regarding the PBA and EOY is located at www.parcconline.org/3-8. You can also visit our webpage located at www.marlboro.k12.nj.us. and click the “Curriculum” tab for PARCC Important Information. Also included here will be the sample mathematics assessments narrated by Dr. Hibbs. Click on the tab labeled “PARCC End of Year Mathematics Explanation Videos.”

PARCC Sample End of Year Assessments Currently, PARCC has released sample End of Year Assessments for mathematics and sample Performance Based Assessments for ELA. PARCC has explained that they will release sample PBA assessments in mathematics and sample EOY in ELA in the Fall of 2014. This presentation will discuss the samples contained in the Grade 3 through Grade 8 Sample End of Year Mathematics Assessments.

PARCC Sample Assessments To see PARCC Sample Assessments, please visit www.parcconline.org. Follow the link to Practice Tests. You can choose either mathematics or English Language Arts/Literacy. There are also answer keys for you to utilize.

Types of Questions . . . On the Mathematics End of Year Sample Tests, there are 23 types of questions that are utilized as sentence starters.

Beginnings . . . The following beginnings to sentences exist . . . Based, Be, Choose, Classify, Complete, Create, Drag and Drop, Enter, For, In, Indicate, On, Order, Place, Plot, Select, Solve, The, To, Use, What, When, and Which

No Guarantees . . . There are no guarantees that the percentages that follow will emulate the percentages of questions on the actual PARCC assessment. But, some disaggregated information is better than no information at all!

Combinations Be aware for problems that use combinations of the starters as well. If two of the key words are in one problem, they will be in bold. You can see what combinations of these words have been released by the PARCC Sample Tests.

Numbers Associated with Each Grade 3 (Total of 44 Questions) Percents are rounded to approximate value 1 Question - (Complete, For, Use, What) 2.2% each 2 Questions - (Drag and Drop) 4.5% 3 Questions - (Plot) 6.8% 4 Questions - (Select) 9% 9 Questions - (Which) 20.4% 22 Questions - (Enter) 50%

Questions You Can Embed . . . Slides 13-45 will give you the specific examples based upon the sentence starters for the PARCC End of Year Math Assessment. These were pulled from the Grades 3-8 PARCC Sample Mathematics EOY Assessments. Notice that after each example there will be information in parenthesis. That is where you can find the specific problem on the PARCC Sample EOY Assessments.

Your Goal . . . Your goal is to embed these types of problems into your classroom. Odds are, you already are doing some of these. We want to ensure that students see every type of problem and can be successful before PARCC full implementation.
