Responsive Classroom Principles: Social curriculum is important How students learn is as important as what they learn Greatest cognitive growth occurs through social interaction To be successful academically, students need to learn and practice specific social skills: cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy and self-control “Knowing the children we teach is as important as knowing the content we teach” Responsive Classroom

In my classroom I have “Classroom Cash In my classroom I have “Classroom Cash.” The students earn “classroom cash” by completing their job for the week. They can then buy items from the class store. This teaches students a basic accounting system as they add and subtract money from their ledger. Classroom Jobs

Math Place Value to 1,000,000,000 Geometry Measurement Multiplication and Division Fractions Decimals Algebra Problem Solving Skills Math

Reading Students read for at least 20-30 minutes per day An adult reads aloud everyday in classroom to demonstrate good reading skills Students are assigned novels to read and discuss with a group of students (Literature Circles) Guided reading groups to work on specific skills

Word Study Lenape School uses Sitton Spelling and Word Skills by EPS, a division of School Specialty, in grades 3rd - 5th.  The program emphasizes correct spelling in everyday writing, not just for an end-of-the-week test. I will also be using Words Their Way – a Word Study Program

Writers Workshop Students will be exposed to many types of writing including: Expository Persuasive Letter Writing Narrative Poetry Book Reports Research

Language Arts/Writing We will focus on writing skills such as: Types of sentences Parts of speech Editing skills Non-Fiction writing Writing in the content areas

Social Studies Geography and Maps Economies of the Western Hemisphere Government in the Western Hemisphere Latin America The United States and Canada

Science Topics Forces Shaping the Earth’s Surface Weather Motion, Force, Work, Energy and Simple Machines

HOMEWORK There will be homework each night including: Homework is due the following day. I have an “oops” policy in case of emergencies. If there is inconsistent homework completion we will talk and come up with a plan to help your child become successful. There will be homework each night including: Independent reading each night with reading log signed Math activity that reinforces skills learned in class Science and/or Social Studies activity that reinforces concepts learned in class Reading or Language Arts Activity Homework is checked for accuracy and understanding HOMEWORK

Celebrations in the classroom Students are welcome to bring a snack in for birthday celebrations. We will eat goodies during our normal snack time which is 10:55 Throughout the year we hold small “in classroom” celebrations and have a special snack. You will receive notice of the celebrations so you can help out by sending in something to share with the class.
