Components of a regional climate monitoring in WMO RA VI Rainer Hollmann Peer Hechler Deutscher Wetterdienst Meeting of the CCl Expert Team on Climate Monitoring, 21-22 September 2006, Tarragona/Spain 06/12/2018

Content (1/1) Scenario (1) Components RA VI Bulletin (1) GCMP / EuCLIS / EuroCLIS (3) RCC function on climate monitoring (4) Further relevant initiatives and activities (1) Outlook (1) 06/12/2018

Scenario (1/1) Via a single Web Portal, an user */each NMHS gets an quick access to consistent operational climate monitoring products, covering RA VI, based on the requirements and dedicated know-how of the 49 RA VI Members. *depending on the „data policy“ 06/12/2018

Components The RA VI Bulletin (1/1) annual publication, issued since 1994 by DWD with support of WMO and ECSN approximately 40 out of 49 RA VI Members contribute the Bulletin summarizes the Members‘ reviews of their territories‘ climate last year brochure (approx. 80 pages) + electronic access through  GCMP challenges: the language problem, the deadline 06/12/2018

Components GCMP / EuCLIS / EuroCLIS (1/3) http://www.gcmp.dwd.de Web Platform in quasi- operational mode providing access to national and European climate monitoring products Implemented in the context of an ECSN project, meanwhile 18 NMHSs contribute Challenges: harmonisation of national products, the language problem, data policy http://www.gcmp.dwd.de 06/12/2018

Components GCMP / EuCLIS / EuroCLIS (2/3) Successor platform of GCMP, currently in test mode, expected to be operational up from January 2007 The EuCLIS system allows all 49 RA VI Members to contribute Plans for 2007: raise the number of contributing institutions as well as of data, products and services 06/12/2018

Components GCMP / EuCLIS / EuroCLIS (3/3) scheduled to be tackled from 2008 onwards aims at a co-ordinated climate monitoring in RA VI on the basis of EuCLIS addresses: further European monitoring products integration of remote-sensing and model output data harmonisation of national monitoring products (presentation/visualisation, methods, input data, …) etc. 06/12/2018

Components RCC-function on climate monitoring (1/4) 1. The general concept global service provision: e.g. GPCs national service provision: e.g. NMHSs regional service provision: e.g. RSMCs, RCCs The primary users of RCCs will be the NMHSs!! RCCs should not duplicate or replace NMHSs’ responsibilities The primary function of RCCs is to ensure, that Members within the Region have an understanding of, and full access to, climate forecasts, products and information. RCC products and services, regional in nature should be those, the NMHSs are not able to produce themselves! 06/12/2018

Provision of LRF products Components RCC-function on climate monitoring (2/4) 2. The RA VI approach Provision of LRF products RA VI RCC Requirements RA VI RCC – related Capabilities Start implementation of a network of multiple multifunctional centres and specialised centres on a pilot basis iterative approach: starting with existing capabilities offered on a voluntary basis aim: formal designation of RA VI RCC functions by RA VI – XV (~ 2009) 06/12/2018
